Pol Bury (1922–2005) was a Belgian painter, sculptor, jewellery designer, writer and graphic artist, arguably
best known for his fountains and sculptures in public spaces. Starting out as a Surrealist painter, inflfluenced
primarily by René Magritte, he later exhibited with the La Jeune Peinture belge group and the CoBrA artists.
In 1950 he discovered the mobiles of Alexander Calder, which made a great impression on him. In 1953 he
began to introduce movement into his own works, gaining a reputation as one of the protagonists of kinetic
art. The mesmerisingly slow and erratic movements of his sculptures and reliefs distinguish him from other
kinetic artists.
With his quirky and innovative work, Bury conquered both the Parisian and New York art worlds, which at the
time brought him international recognition.

This handsome book provides an opportunity to rediscover the multifaceted oeuvre of Pol Bury – without doubt one of Belgium’s most important postwar artists.

With contributions by Pierre Alechinsky, Kurt De Boodt & Paul Dujardin, Pamela Lee, Gilles Marquenie, André Morain and Johan Pas
